When the BCCI unveiled the list of players who had their central contracts renewed for the upcoming cycle, notable absentees included Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer. This omission was perceived as a consequence for their failure to adhere to the mandate of participating in the Ranji Trophy. While Shreyas Iyer had redeemed himself by clinching the IPL 2024 title and making a triumphant ODI return against Sri Lanka, Ishan Kishan had yet to make a significant statement. That is, until he stepped up during the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament, where he had the chance to showcase his prowess and address the concerns surrounding his form.
In an electrifying performance for the Jharkhand Cricket Association, Ishan Kishan strode to the crease at number 6 against Madhya Pradesh, following his team’s dismissal for 225. With a calm and calculated approach in the early stages, Kishan reached his fifty off 61 balls. But as the innings progressed, he transformed into a whirlwind of aggression, smashing his way to a breathtaking century in just 86 balls. The highlight of his innings was a spectacular display of power hitting—two back-to-back sixes catapulted him past the century mark, and in a stunning 39-ball blitz following his fifty, he belted 9 sixes.
Ultimately, Kishan’s explosive knock of 114 from 107 balls was instrumental in propelling Jharkhand into the lead over Madhya Pradesh. This innings marked his return to red-ball cricket since his Test debut against the West Indies in 2023.
With this standout century, Kishan has rekindled hopes of securing a spot in India’s squad for the forthcoming Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand. In a recent conversation with The Times of India, BCCI secretary Jay Shah emphasized that Kishan must adhere to the regulations and continue excelling in domestic cricket to solidify his place.
“He will have to follow the rules. He will have to play domestic cricket,” Shah stated.
Next up for Kishan is the Duleep Trophy 2024, which will be played from September 5-24, here he will captain Team D, led by Shreyas Iyer .
